The University of Missouri, better known as Mizzou, admits a substantial majority of first-year applicants. But admission is not simply a matter of achieving a particular GPA. The university uses specific high school coursework, ACT/SAT eligibility tables and a separate test-optional review process.
For students planning to enter in Fall 2027, it is equally important to understand Mizzou’s scholarship deadlines, competitive academic programs and the real cost of studying in Columbia, Missouri.
The latest complete official federal admissions survey available for the University of Missouri–Columbia reports a 76.1% first-year acceptance rate for Fall 2025. Mizzou received 27,286 applications, admitted 20,774 students and enrolled 6,033 first-year students.
For Fall 2026, Mizzou announced that approximately 6,078 first-time college students were joining the university. However, that August 2026 announcement did not include the total number of applicants and admission offers needed to calculate a verified Fall 2026 acceptance rate.
The widely quoted 78.5% Mizzou acceptance rate is based on 24,490 applications and 19,218 admits from Fall 2024. It is an authentic historical statistic, but it is not the latest admission cycle.
For Fall 2027 applicants, Mizzou offers both a test-score admission pathway and test-optional holistic review. Traditional admission depends on a combination of required high school courses, ACT/SAT results, core GPA or class rank. Test-optional applicants must provide additional application materials.
Mizzou Acceptance Rate Trends: 2024, 2025 and 2026
The University of Missouri’s latest reported acceptance rate is lower than the approximately 78.5% rate that appears on many college information websites.
That is because Mizzou’s 2025 applicant pool grew significantly, while the share admitted declined.
| Fall entering class | Applicants | Admitted | Enrolled | Acceptance rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 24,490 | 19,218 | 5,953 | 78.5% |
| 2025 | 27,286 | 20,774 | 6,033 | 76.1% |
| 2026 | Full applicant total not yet verified | Not yet verified | About 6,078 first-time students, preliminary announcement | Not yet established |

Recent acceptance-rate comparison
The percentages represent offers of admission divided by completed applicants for the same entering class.
From Fall 2024 to Fall 2025, first-year applications increased by approximately 11.4%. Admission offers also increased, but the acceptance rate declined by about 2.4 percentage points.
That is a meaningful change, though it does not transform Mizzou into an extremely selective university. Most applicants continued to receive admission offers.
Why do other websites say Mizzou has a 78% acceptance rate?
Several prominent admissions websites rely on a data series that reports 24,490 applicants and 19,218 admits.
Those numbers appear in the official federal survey as the prior-year Fall 2024 totals. The subsequent Fall 2025 report gives 27,286 applications and 20,774 admits.
Thus, the discrepancy is largely a question of reporting year. Using 78.5% for Fall 2024 is accurate; presenting it as the newest available Fall 2025 statistic is not.
What about the Fall 2026 Class of 2030?
On August 24, 2026, the university announced that 9,138 new students were joining Mizzou, including:
- 6,078 first-time college students.
- 1,211 transfer students.
- 1,849 graduate and professional students.
The same announcement projected total enrollment above 31,650 students.
These figures are valuable for understanding campus growth, but the number of first-time students who enroll cannot be substituted for the number offered admission.
Dividing 6,078 enrolled freshmen by an estimated number of applicants would produce an enrollment-to-application ratio, not the school’s acceptance rate. A verified Fall 2026 acceptance rate requires the complete Fall 2026 applicant and admit counts.

What GPA Do You Need to Get Into the University of Missouri?
Mizzou’s GPA requirements are more nuanced than a single minimum number. The university uses a core GPA based on specified academic subjects, and its traditional admission pathway combines that GPA with ACT/SAT scores when the student’s high school does not report class rank.
For students from ranking high schools, class standing is used with test scores instead.
Students who choose test-optional review are evaluated holistically without applying the same published test-score sliding scale.
What is Mizzou’s minimum GPA?
Under Mizzou’s test-score admission rules, a student with a 24 ACT or 1160 SAT can meet the numerical academic eligibility standard with at least a 2.0 core GPA, provided the required high school curriculum and other conditions are satisfied.
But an applicant with a lower ACT/SAT score may need a higher core GPA or stronger class rank to meet the traditional published standards.
That means the often repeated statement that “Mizzou requires a 2.0 GPA” is incomplete.
Official Mizzou core GPA requirements for non-ranking high schools
The following table reproduces the academic thresholds from Mizzou’s Fall 2027 admission requirements.
| ACT composite | SAT total | Minimum core GPA |
|---|---|---|
| 24 or higher | 1160 or higher | 2.00 |
| 23 | 1130–1150 | 2.80 |
| 22 | 1100–1120 | 2.90 |
| 21 | 1060–1090 | 3.05 |
| 20 | 1030–1050 | 3.20 |
| 19 | 990–1020 | 3.35 |
| 18 | 960–980 | 3.50 |
| 17 | 920–950 | 3.65 |
These thresholds are for the traditional test-score admission pathway at a non-ranking high school. They are not a general GPA distribution of enrolled students, and they do not apply in the same way to a test-optional application.
What if your high school reports class rank?
Mizzou uses a different sliding scale for ranking high schools.
| ACT | SAT | Required class standing |
|---|---|---|
| 24+ | 1160+ | Any rank with a 2.0+ core GPA |
| 23 | 1130–1150 | Top 52% |
| 22 | 1100–1120 | Top 46% |
| 21 | 1060–1090 | Top 38% |
| 20 | 1030–1050 | Top 31% |
| 19 | 990–1020 | Top 22% |
| 18 | 960–980 | Top 14% |
| 17 | 920–950 | Top 6% |
Mizzou only uses this table if the high school actually ranks its students. Applicants cannot create a class rank themselves or submit an unofficial ranking when the school is classified as non-ranking.
What exactly counts toward the Mizzou core GPA?
Mizzou calculates its core GPA using:
- All English courses.
- All science courses.
- All social studies courses.
- All foreign language courses.
- Mathematics courses at Algebra I level or higher.
- The student’s highest grade in a fine arts course.
Because of this method, a student’s Mizzou core GPA can differ from the cumulative weighted or unweighted GPA on their school transcript.
Before assuming you meet a 2.8, 3.2 or 3.5 GPA threshold, check which courses Mizzou includes. A high school GPA containing physical education, general electives or other courses that do not enter the core calculation may give a misleading picture of eligibility.
Can you get into Mizzou with a 3.0 GPA?
Potentially, yes. For example, Mizzou’s non-ranking high school table lists a 2.90 core GPA alongside a 22 ACT or 1100–1120 SAT.
A student with a 3.0 core GPA and qualifying testing results may meet the relevant numerical requirement. A student with the same GPA applying test-optional receives a different, holistic review.
In both cases, the student also needs to complete the required core curriculum and submit the correct documents.
What is the average freshman GPA at Mizzou?
The university’s latest public federal admissions survey verifies application counts and test-score distributions but does not report a comparable official average high school GPA for the Fall 2025 entering class.
Some third-party websites estimate an average GPA around 3.6, but those figures are often modeled rather than directly reported by Mizzou.
This guide therefore does not present an estimated 3.6 or 3.61 as a verified institutional average. The official core GPA eligibility tables above are more useful for determining the actual application pathway.
Mizzou SAT and ACT Scores: What Is Competitive in 2026?
The University of Missouri allows most Fall 2027 freshman applicants to apply with or without SAT/ACT scores.
However, unlike universities where submitted scores are purely optional context, Mizzou has a published test-score pathway that can make an applicant eligible for admission based on a particular combination of testing, core GPA and class rank.
Actual Fall 2025 SAT and ACT results
The university’s official federal survey reports the following results for enrolled first-year students whose test scores were used in their admission decisions.
| Exam component | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAT Reading and Writing | 580 | 620 | 670 |
| SAT Math | 570 | 610 | 660 |
| ACT composite | 23 | 26 | 30 |
| ACT English | 22 | 25 | 30 |
| ACT Math | 22 | 25 | 28 |
The Fall 2025 federal admissions report does not separately publish a total SAT composite percentile table. Adding individual Reading/Writing and Math percentiles does not necessarily reproduce the correct composite percentile distribution, so this article does not invent a Fall 2025 SAT composite range.
10% used SAT scores
580 enrolled first-year students had SAT scores used in the admission decision.
60% used ACT scores
3,583 enrolled first-year students had ACT scores used in the admission decision.
These figures describe enrolled students with testing information used in admission. They do not describe every applicant, and the groups can overlap.
Is a 24 ACT enough for Mizzou?
A 24 ACT satisfies the published traditional test-score threshold when combined with at least a 2.0 core GPA and the required high school curriculum.
That does not mean all students who enroll have an ACT of 24, or that other majors, scholarships and the Honors College use exactly the same expectations.
Is an 1160 SAT enough?
An SAT total of 1160 similarly meets the published traditional testing threshold, provided the other academic eligibility requirements are satisfied.
Mizzou’s official criteria also allow certain lower SAT scores when paired with a higher core GPA or class rank.
Does Mizzou superscore?
Yes. Mizzou accepts ACT superscores issued by ACT and calculates SAT superscores from official score reports sent by College Board.
The university states that it uses superscores for admission and scholarship decisions.
Testing codes: SAT 6875 and ACT 2382.
A score of 1160 SAT or 24 ACT is a published traditional admission threshold, not the same thing as the typical enrolled student’s testing result. Similarly, the 26 median ACT in the Fall 2025 report is not a universal minimum required of applicants.
University of Missouri Required High School Courses
Mizzou expects freshman applicants to complete at least 17 units of college-preparatory high school coursework.
One unit normally means one year of study. The details below are based on Mizzou’s current Fall 2027 requirements.
| High school subject | Units required | Important requirements |
|---|---|---|
| English | 4 | Two units must emphasize composition or writing. One unit may be speech or debate. |
| Mathematics | 4 | All units must be Algebra I or higher-level mathematics. |
| Science | 3 | At least one unit must include a laboratory course. |
| Social Studies | 3 | Approved history, government, economics and other social studies courses. |
| Foreign Language | 2 | Both units must be in the same language. American Sign Language is acceptable. |
| Fine Arts | 1 | Approved fine arts coursework. |
| Total | 17 | Standard freshman college-preparatory requirement. |
Does computer science count toward the math requirement?
Not automatically. Mizzou’s current freshman requirements specifically list Computer Science, Programming, Consumer Math, Pre-Algebra and certain other courses as not acceptable substitutes for the four required mathematics units.
Students interested in computing should not assume that several programming electives will replace Algebra II, Geometry or other required mathematics preparation.
Does American Sign Language satisfy the foreign language requirement?
Yes. Mizzou lists American Sign Language as acceptable for the foreign language requirement.
The university also notes that students who complete four units in the same foreign language may be eligible for an exemption from certain later university language requirements in Arts and Science or Journalism programs.
What if a student is missing one required class?
Mizzou says students missing a core course may still be considered if the remaining requirements are met.
However, this is a possibility for additional review, not an unconditional waiver. Applicants should contact Admissions about a missing class rather than assume it will not matter.
If your high school uses an integrated mathematics curriculum, unusual subject titles or a nontraditional credit system, ask your school counselor to verify how the coursework corresponds to Mizzou’s 17-unit requirement. Correcting a documentation problem early can prevent an avoidable delay.
How Mizzou’s Test-Optional Admission Process Works
Mizzou continues to offer test-optional freshman admission for Fall 2027.
But choosing test-optional review changes how the application is evaluated. Instead of applying the published ACT/SAT-and-GPA eligibility table, an admissions committee reviews the student’s academic record and supporting materials holistically.
What must test-optional applicants submit?
| Application route | Required test-optional materials |
|---|---|
| Mizzou’s application | Official high school transcript, activities or resume information, and the required short essay question. |
| Common Application | Official high school transcript, completed Activities section and Common App personal essay. |
Students must also complete the normal application and pay the applicable fee or obtain an approved waiver.
Is test-optional better than submitting a lower score?
Not always. The answer depends on whether your testing results already meet Mizzou’s published numerical admission requirements.
If you have a 24 ACT and satisfy the core curriculum and GPA requirements, the traditional review pathway may make eligibility easier to establish.
If your scores do not meet the relevant sliding-scale threshold, test-optional review may allow the committee to examine academic rigor, activities, writing and other circumstances more broadly.
Mizzou also says that providing a score can help with course placement and may expand eligibility for certain scholarships.
Can you switch between testing options?
Mizzou permits changes in some circumstances.
A student who initially applies test-optional may request that scores be reviewed later. However, a student who applies with test scores and receives an admission decision cannot subsequently switch that completed decision to a test-optional review.
The university instructs applicants seeking a permitted change to email mizzouapp@missouri.edu.
Can homeschooled students apply test-optional?
No, under the university’s current domestic freshman requirements.
Students attending homeschool programs or non-accredited high schools must provide qualifying standardized test scores.
Mizzou lists at least a 24 ACT or 1160 SAT, along with a transcript documenting required coursework, for that admission pathway.
Test-optional applicants can receive merit scholarship consideration, but selected competitive scholarships still require ACT or SAT results. Do not assume that test-optional admission removes every testing requirement associated with Honors or special scholarship programs.
Is Mizzou More Selective for Journalism, Business, Nursing or Engineering?
The university-wide 76.1% acceptance rate covers first-year undergraduate admission to Mizzou.
It does not mean that every admitted freshman is guaranteed a place in a later professional program or upper-level major.
Mizzou explicitly warns that Journalism, Business, Engineering and other programs may have additional selection or progression requirements.
Missouri School of Journalism
The Missouri School of Journalism has an especially distinctive admission pathway.
First-time college students admitted to the University of Missouri are eligible to begin as undeclared journalism majors.
To progress into one of the school’s career pathways, students generally must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete specified prerequisite courses with grades of at least C-.
The school’s listed career paths include:
- Television.
- Cross-Platform Editing and Producing.
- Photojournalism and Documentary.
- Reporting and Writing.
- Social and Audience Strategy.
- Strategic Communication.
Mizzou’s Missouri Method offers journalism students practical experience through professional media organizations such as KOMU-TV, KBIA-FM and the Columbia Missourian.
That makes it particularly useful to ask about actual newsroom participation and progression requirements during a campus visit, rather than simply asking for an unverified Journalism acceptance percentage.
Official Missouri School of Journalism undergraduate admission standards.
Trulaske College of Business
Admission to the university is separate from the later competitive admission process for the upper-level business program.
Trulaske’s published requirements state that students applying to the upper-level BSBA program must have completed at least 45 college credit hours and have a minimum 2.600 University of Missouri GPA at the time of application.
Students must also complete or be taking specified prerequisite courses, including accounting and quantitative coursework.
The college explicitly says that meeting the 2.600 GPA minimum does not guarantee admission. When a major is at capacity, qualified students may be considered for another business major preference.
Official Trulaske upper-level admission requirements.
Sinclair School of Nursing
Prospective nursing students should understand that admission to Mizzou as a freshman is not the same thing as admission to the clinical nursing major.
The Sinclair School of Nursing describes freshmen and sophomores in the traditional BSN pathway as pre-nursing students.
Students normally complete approximately 60 credit hours of general education and prerequisite coursework before applying to enter the clinical nursing major.
After entering the clinical major, students complete approximately 61 additional credit hours of nursing coursework.
If nursing is your goal, request a first-year academic plan showing when to take anatomy, physiology and other nursing prerequisites. Ask how many applicants compete for clinical placement, which grades matter most and what happens if admission to the clinical major is delayed.
Official Mizzou traditional BSN pathway.
College of Engineering
Engineering students should review mathematics and science readiness in addition to general freshman admission eligibility.
A student who satisfies the 17-unit high school curriculum may still need placement or preparatory coursework before entering certain engineering sequences.
Ask the engineering department about calculus placement, course progression and any additional major requirements rather than relying only on the university-wide admit rate.
The official Fall 2025 federal survey does not provide separate first-year acceptance percentages for Journalism, Nursing, Business, Computer Science or Engineering. Publishing precise percentages for those programs without matching official applicant and admission counts would be misleading.
How Competitive Is the University of Missouri Honors College?
Mizzou’s Honors College has a separate application process and higher academic benchmarks for automatic application access.
Students may apply through a test-score route or as test-optional applicants. However, meeting the application eligibility benchmark does not guarantee Honors College admission.
Published Honors College application-access criteria
| Admission route | Benchmark for automatic Honors application access |
|---|---|
| ACT | 31 or higher |
| SAT | 1390 or higher |
| ACT 28–30 | Top 20% class rank or 3.75 core GPA at a non-ranking school |
| SAT 1300–1380 | Top 20% class rank or 3.75 core GPA at a non-ranking school |
| Test-optional | 4.0 core GPA |
Students who do not meet those automatic application-access benchmarks can still request permission to apply by contacting the Honors College.
What does the Honors application include?
The college asks applicants to submit a separate resume and a 500–750 word essay.
Its essay prompts encourage students to explain a personal quality beyond grades or discuss a meaningful activity and how it has shaped their development.
The Honors College evaluates those materials holistically and does not publish a guaranteed admission GPA.
Honors deadlines for Fall 2027
The Honors application opens September 15, 2026. The deadline for selected Honors scholarships is December 1, 2026, and the general Honors application deadline is February 1, 2027.
Choose an essay topic that reveals something your transcript cannot. An account of building a small project, balancing a job with schoolwork or learning to collaborate may be more convincing than simply listing difficult courses and awards.
University of Missouri Application Deadlines for Fall 2027
Mizzou follows a rolling admission schedule rather than a conventional binding Early Decision program.
Its Fall 2027 application opened August 1, 2026, with admission decisions beginning October 1 and continuing as applications are reviewed.
For students seeking scholarships, the most important deadline is much earlier than the final application closing date.
Students can begin applying through Mizzou’s application or the applicable Common Application route.
Eligible students can complete a separate Honors application after applying to the university.
Mizzou starts releasing decisions and continues reviewing completed applications.
Submit the admission application and complete the separate general, competitive or departmental scholarship applications where required.
The Fall 2027 merit policy specifies that required official materials, including transcripts, must arrive by this date for priority consideration.
The university begins notifying students selected for Fall 2027 merit awards.
Important for consideration for university and applicable state need-based aid.
Also relevant to Honors housing selection and other Honors processes.
Review grants, scholarships, loans and remaining estimated expenses.
Important for completing enrollment and housing steps on the schedule provided by Mizzou.
Mizzou lists July 1 as the final fall application deadline. Students applying this late should not assume priority scholarship funding or preferred housing options remain available.
Does Mizzou have Early Action or Early Decision?
The university’s international admissions FAQ states that Mizzou does not use conventional Early Action or Early Decision deadlines.
Instead, admission decisions begin October 1 and continue on a rolling basis.
Applying earlier can therefore be useful for knowing your status and preparing for scholarships and housing, but the university does not publish a separate verified Early Action acceptance rate comparable with the plans at many private colleges.
Students may technically be able to apply until July 1, 2027, but December 1, 2026 is the important freshman scholarship application deadline. Waiting until spring to apply can substantially limit scholarship consideration, even when admission itself remains possible.
How to Apply to the University of Missouri
Mizzou allows prospective first-year students to apply directly or through the Common Application.
The general domestic freshman application fee is $55, with fee waivers available for eligible students.
Choose the correct student category
Students earning college credit while still in high school, including dual-enrollment credit, are generally treated as first-year applicants. College coursework earned after graduation may make the applicant a transfer student.
Select the test-score or test-optional pathway
Review the published ACT/SAT, core GPA and class-rank tables before deciding. If you choose test-optional review, complete the additional essay and activities requirements.
Submit the application and fee
Use accurate academic information, select an intended major and pay the fee or request an approved waiver.
Arrange an official high school transcript
Request that your high school send the official transcript directly to Mizzou. The Office of Admissions lists its mailing address as 230 Jesse Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
Send qualifying scores if using traditional admission
Use official SAT/ACT score-reporting methods and check the superscore rules. Do not assume a self-reported score will satisfy every official-document requirement.
Complete separate scholarship applications
For the best Fall 2027 scholarship consideration, complete the university’s relevant scholarship application process by December 1 and confirm supporting documents have arrived by December 15.
Track your Application Status Page
Check for missing documents, requests for information and the admission decision. After admission, use the same process to complete enrollment, housing and any Honors or scholarship steps.
What happens if you do not meet the regular admission requirements?
Mizzou says applicants who do not satisfy the published traditional criteria automatically receive a more comprehensive review.
Factors can include the rigor of the academic curriculum, core GPA and significant circumstances explained through the application or supporting materials.
In some cases, Admissions may ask the student to improve testing results or wait for additional senior-year grades.
Alternative pathways after an admission denial
Mizzou also identifies several alternative routes for selected students who were denied general freshman admission.
One is Tiger Pathways, a partnership involving Moberly Area Community College and the University of Missouri.
Students in the program complete a combination of community-college and Mizzou coursework, with advising intended to support eventual university progression.
The university states that applicants must first have applied for freshman admission and been denied. Published eligibility includes a minimum 17 ACT or 920 SAT equivalent, or a 2.50 high school GPA, along with other program conditions.
It can be disappointing to discover that your record does not meet the simplest admission route. But it is worth asking Admissions which review or pathway actually applies rather than assuming a denied first-year application ends every possible route to Mizzou.
University of Missouri Transfer Acceptance Rate and Requirements
Transfer admissions should be evaluated separately from the university’s overall freshman acceptance rate.
The same official Fall 2025 federal survey reports:
Of the 1,974 admitted transfer applicants, 1,215 enrolled in Fall 2025.
What GPA do you need to transfer to Mizzou?
The university’s general transfer admissions page normally requires:
- A 2.5 GPA in completed college-level coursework.
- A grade of C- or higher in an eligible transferable mathematics or English composition course.
- Additional freshman admission eligibility when fewer than 24 college-level credits have been completed.
There are important alternatives for qualifying students from accepted accredited two-year colleges who have completed an Associate of Arts degree or Missouri’s CORE 42 curriculum with the specified GPA and other conditions.
Missouri community college transfers
Students who complete a qualifying Associate of Arts degree or CORE 42 may have general education requirements recognized under the applicable transfer rules.
However, satisfying general education is not the same thing as satisfying the specific degree requirements of Nursing, Business, Engineering or another major.
Can you transfer from another University of Missouri System campus?
Mizzou provides separate rules for students transferring in good standing from other UM System campuses.
Those students may meet general university admission requirements with a minimum 2.0 GPA and the required number of transferable credits, depending on their circumstances.
Mizzou explicitly states that admission to the university does not automatically guarantee admission to an individual degree program. Always ask how many credits will satisfy the exact major before accepting a transfer offer.
Does Mizzou Have an Admissions Waitlist?
The official Fall 2025 federal admissions survey identifies Mizzou as not operating a standard first-time-student admissions waitlist for that reporting cycle.
Therefore, a Fall 2025 first-year waitlist admission rate should not be calculated from the survey.
If your own application status is delayed, check whether the admissions office needs a transcript, score report or additional senior-year information.
A delayed decision or comprehensive review is not necessarily a waitlist placement.
University of Missouri Admission for International Students
International students follow separate academic-document and English proficiency requirements.
Mizzou’s international admissions page provides several academic eligibility scales, rather than requiring every international student to present a U.S.-style GPA originally calculated by their school.
International high school academic requirements
| Grading system | Published academic threshold |
|---|---|
| U.S. 4-point scale | 2.5 GPA or higher |
| 5-point scale | 3.5 GPA or higher |
| 100-point scale | Average grade of 80 or higher |
| 10-point scale | Average grade of 8 or higher |
| IGCSE / A-Level pathway | Specified qualifying IGCSE and A-Level results |
Applicants from other grading systems have their records evaluated and converted under the university’s published procedures.
English proficiency requirements
For many undergraduate colleges, Mizzou currently lists the following baseline English proficiency scores:
| English proficiency exam | General undergraduate benchmark |
|---|---|
| Duolingo English Test | 110 overall, with each component at least 100 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT under the 2026 revised scale | 4.5 overall, with no section below 4.0 |
| PTE Academic | 59 overall |
Some programs have higher standards.
For example, the School of Journalism requires a 130 Duolingo score or 7.0 IELTS under the published requirements. The School of Nursing also has additional English-speaking standards.
Students should verify the exact policy for the academic college they want to enter rather than assuming the baseline requirement applies to every program.
International admission scholarships
For Fall 2027, Mizzou lists international freshman awards including:
- International Honors Scholarship: $20,000 annually.
- International Merit Scholarship: $10,000 annually.
These scholarships are competitive and depend on the applicant’s qualifications. SAT/ACT scores are preferred in scholarship review but are not required for general international admission.
The current international scholarship page requires fall applicants to submit the application and supporting materials by December 1 for consideration.
An older university FAQ refers to a later March scholarship deadline for some international awards. The current Fall 2027 international scholarship page states December 1. Students seeking those awards should follow the more specific current scholarship instructions and confirm any exceptions directly with International Admissions.

University of Missouri Tuition, Scholarships and Financial Aid
Admission is only the first major decision. The next question is whether a student and family can afford four years at Mizzou.
As a public university, Mizzou charges different undergraduate tuition for Missouri residents and students from other states.
Official 2026–27 estimated undergraduate costs
Mizzou estimates the following direct university charges for full-time students enrolled for the fall and spring semesters.
| Annual cost component | Missouri residents | Non-Missouri residents |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated tuition and fees | $16,162–$20,290 | $39,324–$43,452 |
| Estimated housing and dining | $15,780 | $15,780 |
| Total estimated billed costs | $31,942–$36,070 | $55,104–$59,232 |
The tuition range depends on the student’s academic program, while the housing/dining estimate reflects common incoming-student arrangements.
The university specifically notes that books, supplies, personal expenses and certain other costs are not included in these direct billed-cost totals.
For international students, Mizzou separately estimates a $62,124–$66,252 annual 12-month budget for 2026–27, including additional categories such as international student insurance and summer living allowance.
Does applying early help with Mizzou scholarships?
Yes, from a deadline perspective.
For Fall 2027 students, Mizzou’s current scholarship policy requires the admission application by December 1, 2026 and official required supporting materials by December 15, 2026 for priority freshman merit scholarship consideration.
The university is also changing its scholarship selection process.
For Fall 2027, Mizzou no longer relies on the old simple award grid that guaranteed a particular merit scholarship solely from a published GPA-and-test-score combination. Merit awards now involve review of the student’s core GPA and course rigor.
Missouri resident merit scholarships for Fall 2027
| Published award | Annual amount | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mizzou Scholars Award | $11,000 | Competitive merit review. |
| Chancellor’s Award | $7,200 | Competitive merit review. |
| Curators Scholars Award | $5,000 | Competitive merit review. |
| Excellence Award | $3,500 | Competitive merit review. |
These are published award amounts, not scholarships that every qualifying applicant automatically receives.
Nonresident scholarship opportunities
For Fall 2027, Mizzou lists:
- Mark Twain Level 1: $21,500 per year.
- Mark Twain Level 2: $8,500 per year.
- Border State Award: $3,000 per year for qualifying residents of the eight states bordering Missouri.
- Tiger Border County awards: Additional merit opportunities for eligible residents of counties bordering Missouri.
The Border State Award covers eligible residents of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Tennessee, subject to the actual scholarship rules.
Nonresident merit awards generally apply toward the nonresident portion of tuition and may have restrictions on combining scholarships.
A student from a county bordering Missouri should examine the Tiger Border County scholarship options separately from the more general Border State Award. The published amounts and restrictions are different, and the best award cannot always be determined from the student’s GPA alone.
Honors and competitive scholarships
Mizzou’s published competitive scholarships include the Stamps Scholars Award, which provides up to the estimated cost of attendance plus additional academic development funding for selected recipients.
Its listed academic benchmark includes a 32–36 ACT or 1420–1600 SAT and at least a 3.5 core GPA, alongside separate Honors and application requirements.
Other award programs, including National Merit and Perfect Score scholarships, have distinct eligibility rules.
FAFSA and financial aid deadlines
Mizzou’s federal school code is 002516.
The university’s priority FAFSA deadline for 2027–28 is February 1, 2027.
Submitting the FAFSA can be important for university need-based grants and applicable Missouri state aid.
Scholarships and grants generally reduce the cost without repayment. Loans must be repaid. Compare the final net cost after gift aid, including housing, books and personal expenses, before deciding that an admission offer is affordable.

Columbia, Missouri: Local Tips for Prospective Mizzou Students
The University of Missouri is in Columbia, often called CoMo, roughly midway between Kansas City and St. Louis.
Its location combines a large public research university with a walkable downtown area, student-oriented businesses, local recreation and a significant university-related healthcare and research community.
For students comparing campuses, the question is not just whether Columbia sounds like an enjoyable college town. It is whether the day-to-day arrangements fit their academic plans and personal preferences.
Where is the admissions office?
The University of Missouri Office of Admissions is located at 230 Jesse Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
For organized visits and special open-house events, the university may use other check-in locations, such as the Reynolds Alumni Center.
How long is a campus tour?
The standard Mizzou visit includes an admissions overview followed by a roughly 90-minute walking tour.
Students can also arrange academic-focused experiences or attend longer events to learn about particular colleges and degree programs.
Check parking instructions before driving to campus
Mizzou sends registered Admissions visitors a confirmation packet with parking instructions and information about a virtual visitor pass.
The university specifically advises official admissions visitors not to purchase a general visitor permit through the parking portal before checking their event instructions.
For people visiting campus independently, the university lists a $12 daily visitor permit and metered parking at $1.25 per hour under its current published arrangements.
Parking enforcement generally operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with some areas restricted around the clock.
If you are arriving for a scheduled tour, use the lot and instructions stated in your confirmation email rather than selecting a parking garage based solely on how close it looks to Jesse Hall. The university warns that improper parking can result in a citation or towing.
Visit during the type of day you would actually attend class
Columbia’s campus atmosphere changes noticeably during the academic year, especially when classes, events and college athletics are taking place.
If possible, visit while classes are in session rather than relying only on summer photographs.
Ask students where they study between lectures, how they travel to classes on opposite sides of campus and what resources they use when an academic course becomes difficult.
Explore downtown Columbia after the tour
Downtown Columbia is immediately adjacent to parts of campus, making it useful for understanding the wider student environment.
Walking around downtown can help applicants evaluate access to food, social activities, local employment and everyday services.
Mizzou’s official Columbia guide also highlights the area’s music venues, independent cinema, restaurants and the nearby MKT Trail, which connects to the Katy Trail.
Transportation without a car
Mizzou operates its Tiger Line shuttle in partnership with the City of Columbia.
Shuttles connect designated campus locations, parking areas and other university facilities. Routes include Hearnes, Trowbridge, Reactor and selected other loops.
Service frequency varies by route and time of day, so students should check the current schedules rather than assume every shuttle runs at the same interval.
Students may find a car unnecessary for many campus activities, but off-campus housing, internships and personal travel plans can change that calculation.
Plan the trip from another state carefully
Mizzou is approximately a two-hour drive from both Kansas City and St. Louis under typical conditions, according to its admissions guide.
Families arriving by air should compare flight availability, rental cars or other ground transportation options before choosing an airport.
A cheaper flight is not necessarily the better option if the total ground transportation cost and travel time are much greater.
Ask program-specific questions rather than only touring landmarks
Jesse Hall and Mizzou’s historic Columns are memorable campus landmarks, but applicants interested in particular fields should request information about the facilities and experiences that affect their intended academic path.
For example:
- Journalism: Ask how students enter reporting, photography, broadcasting or strategic communication experiences through the Missouri Method.
- Business: Ask how and when students apply to the upper-level program and whether preferred majors can reach capacity.
- Nursing: Ask about the pre-nursing course sequence and competitive application to the clinical major.
- Engineering: Ask about mathematics placement, laboratory requirements and the typical first-year course sequence.
- Honors: Ask what the classroom experience and separate application involve, rather than focusing exclusively on the GPA benchmarks.
Ask a current student, “What was different about living and studying here from what you expected before arriving?” A thoughtful answer may reveal more about housing, independence, coursework or campus life than a brochure or admissions percentage.

Beyond Acceptance: Retention, Graduation and Student Outcomes
A university’s acceptance rate tells you how many applicants were offered admission. It does not establish whether students successfully complete their degrees.
Mizzou’s August 2026 enrollment announcement reported:
These measures involve different student populations and time periods. They should not be interpreted as guaranteed individual outcomes for the Fall 2027 entering class.
What should students investigate?
Before choosing Mizzou, evaluate academic advising, tutoring, career services, degree sequencing, housing and the requirements for entering your preferred major.
For a student interested in Journalism or Nursing, the opportunities available after enrolling may be more important than the general university acceptance rate.
For a student concerned about cost, a financial plan that remains sustainable across four years deserves just as much attention as the first-year scholarship offer.

Frequently Asked Questions About University of Missouri Acceptance Rate 2026
What is the University of Missouri acceptance rate in 2026?
The latest complete official federal admissions survey reports a 76.1% first-year acceptance rate for Fall 2025, based on 20,774 admitted applicants from 27,286 applications. Mizzou announced approximately 6,078 entering first-time college students for Fall 2026, but the corresponding Fall 2026 admission-offer total was not verified in the reviewed sources.
Why do websites show a 78.5% Mizzou acceptance rate?
The 78.5% figure comes from Fall 2024 federal admissions data, when Mizzou admitted 19,218 of 24,490 applicants. The subsequent Fall 2025 federal survey reports 20,774 admits from 27,286 applicants, equivalent to 76.1%.
Is the University of Missouri hard to get into?
Mizzou admits a majority of first-year applicants, but admission is not automatic. Applicants must meet its high school coursework and academic requirements or qualify through the test-optional holistic review process.
What GPA is required for Mizzou?
The traditional test-score pathway uses a sliding scale. For a non-ranking high school, an applicant with a 24 ACT or 1160 SAT can meet the numerical eligibility requirement with a 2.0 core GPA, while lower scores generally require a higher core GPA. Students must also satisfy the required high school curriculum.
Can you get into Mizzou with a 3.0 GPA?
Potentially. Under the published non-ranking high school table, a 22 ACT or 1100–1120 SAT can meet the numerical threshold alongside a 2.90 core GPA. Students with a 3.0 core GPA may also choose test-optional holistic review, provided they meet the applicable requirements.
What ACT and SAT scores are competitive at the University of Missouri?
For Fall 2025 enrolled students whose scores were used in admission, Mizzou reported a middle-50% ACT composite range of 23–30 and median of 26. Its SAT section ranges were 580–670 Reading and Writing and 570–660 Math. The traditional admission eligibility threshold is 24 ACT or 1160 SAT with the required core GPA and curriculum.
Is Mizzou test-optional for Fall 2027?
Yes. Most freshman applicants can choose test-optional review, which requires an official transcript, activities information and an essay. Homeschooled students and applicants from non-accredited schools are not eligible for the standard test-optional pathway.
Does Mizzou superscore the SAT and ACT?
Yes. The university accepts official ACT superscores and calculates SAT superscores from official College Board results. Mizzou says superscores can be used for admission and scholarship decisions.
Does the University of Missouri offer Early Decision?
No conventional binding Early Decision or separate Early Action plan is identified in the current admissions guidance. Mizzou uses rolling admissions, with decisions beginning October 1. Its major Fall 2027 scholarship application deadline is December 1, 2026.
What is the Mizzou Nursing acceptance rate?
The general university acceptance rate is not a separate Nursing acceptance rate. Traditional BSN students normally begin as pre-nursing students and apply to the clinical major after completing required prerequisite and general education coursework. The official general admissions survey does not provide a comparable Nursing major admit percentage.
What is the University of Missouri transfer acceptance rate?
The Fall 2025 federal survey reports 2,795 transfer applicants and 1,974 admitted, giving a calculated transfer acceptance rate of 70.6%. Standard transfer admission normally requires a 2.5 GPA and qualifying transferable English or mathematics coursework, with separate pathways for certain students.
What is Mizzou’s FAFSA school code?
The University of Missouri–Columbia federal school code is 002516. The priority FAFSA deadline for the 2027–28 academic year is February 1, 2027.
How much does Mizzou cost for Missouri residents?
For 2026–27, Mizzou estimates annual resident undergraduate tuition and fees at $16,162–$20,290, depending on academic program. Adding its $15,780 housing and dining estimate produces annual billed-cost estimates of $31,942–$36,070 before other expenses and financial aid.

Editorial review date: October 15, 2026. The principal 76.1% acceptance rate is calculated from Fall 2025 applicants and admits reported in the University of Missouri–Columbia’s 2025 federal IPEDS Admissions Survey. The widely quoted 78.5% figure belongs to Fall 2024. The university’s preliminary Fall 2026 enrollment announcement does not establish a new Fall 2026 acceptance rate. Test-score percentiles describe students whose results were used in admission, and academic eligibility criteria should not be confused with the profile of admitted or enrolled students.
Final Assessment: How Hard Is It to Get Into Mizzou?
The University of Missouri–Columbia is accessible to many academically prepared students, with a latest verified first-year acceptance rate of 76.1%. But that headline percentage tells only part of the story.
Mizzou’s admission rules make high school preparation particularly important. Students applying with test scores should compare their ACT/SAT result, class rank or core GPA with the university’s published eligibility tables. Students applying without scores need a complete test-optional application that provides additional information about academic readiness and personal experience.
Students interested in Journalism, Business, Nursing or another program with progression requirements must also distinguish general university admission from admission to the later professional or upper-level major.
The practical priority for Fall 2027 applicants is clear: complete the required courses, choose the appropriate review pathway, apply before December 1 if scholarships matter and examine the actual four-year cost before accepting an offer.
A college decision is more than a percentage. It is about finding an academic path you are prepared for, a community where you can grow and a financial plan that lets you complete the degree you came to pursue.
